Choose MX Keys S if you regularly need a numeric keypad or want the included Logi Bolt receiver. Choose MX Keys Mini if a compact layout matters more and Bluetooth already works for your computer. Budget for a separately purchased Bolt receiver if your Mini setup needs one.
This guide covers the consumer multi-OS MX Keys S and MX Keys Mini. Business editions, Mac-specific editions and keyboard/mouse bundles can have different contents. Official sources, including the US store’s live specifications and box-content panels, were checked on October 5, 2026. We have not tested typing noise, comfort, wireless reliability or battery runtime. Purchase links may generate an affiliate commission for SEFP Journal without an additional charge to you.
Layout and accessories change the buying decision
The official US MX Keys S offer and MX Keys Mini offer document the following. Check your selected language layout and edition before ordering.
| Consideration | MX Keys S | MX Keys Mini |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Full size with numeric keypad | Compact, without numeric keypad |
| Width in US specifications | 430.2 mm | 295.99 mm |
| Logi Bolt receiver in consumer box | Included | Not included; compatible, sold separately |
| Device switching | Up to three Easy-Switch profiles | Up to three Easy-Switch profiles |
| Charging | USB-C; USB-A-to-C cable included | USB-C; USB-A-to-C cable included |
| Illumination | Sensor-controlled backlighting | Sensor-controlled backlighting |
Frequent spreadsheet entry can make the S layout useful. Mini leaves more desk width available for a mouse. That space difference does not prove better posture or comfort for every person; consider your own reach, shortcuts and need for navigation keys.
Bolt, Bluetooth and the charging cable are different things
Both models document Bluetooth Low Energy and Logi Bolt compatibility. Bolt is a wireless connection through a USB receiver; it is not interchangeable with Logitech Unifying or other Logitech receiver types. A mouse receiver you already own should be checked for its exact type before you assume it can pair with the new keyboard.
The S setup guide and Mini setup guide describe wireless pairing and USB-C charging. You can keep typing while charging, but that does not establish a wired USB typing mode: the documented typing connections are wireless. If your workplace requires a wired keyboard, confirm an appropriate wired product instead.
On a computer without usable Bluetooth, include Mini’s receiver cost in your comparison. Check USB-A availability or an appropriate adapter for the included cable/receiver. Logitech’s current product specifications also recommend Bolt for Mac setups where FileVault can prevent Bluetooth connection before login; confirm the behavior on your actual machine rather than assuming every startup screen supports wireless typing.
Basic typing compatibility is broader than app compatibility
Both store pages describe basic functions on supported systems beyond Windows and macOS, while their Logi Options+ customization is for Windows and macOS. A compatible Linux, ChromeOS, iPadOS or Android connection does not mean all app-specific shortcuts, backlight settings or automation features work there. Check the current product requirements and Options+ page for your exact operating-system version.
Current Mini marketing also lists Smart Actions and backlighting customization in Options+. Those app features are not sufficient evidence that you must buy S. Physical Easy-Switch lets you change an already paired channel; it should not be confused with software that coordinates multiple devices. If a managed work computer blocks software installation or device pairing, establish what is allowed before purchasing.
Battery headlines do not establish an upgrade
Both current US product panels advertise up to ten days, or up to five months with backlighting off. Logitech qualifies those figures by computing and usage conditions. Lighting level and how you use the keyboard matter; these are manufacturer maxima, not our measured results. Choose by layout, connection and actual total price rather than an assumed battery advantage.
Who should buy each model?
- MX Keys S: numeric entry is frequent, your desk accommodates the full layout, and an included Bolt receiver helps your setup.
- MX Keys Mini: desk width or portability matters, you do not need a numeric keypad, and Bluetooth or a verified separately purchased Bolt receiver meets your needs.
- Keep your existing keyboard: its layout and connection already work. No measured productivity, ergonomic or profit improvement has been established.
Compare current S contents and final US price with Mini contents and final US price, including any receiver or adapter. Offers, stock and language layouts can change. If you also need a mouse, see our separate MX Master 4 vs 3S buying guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does every MX Keys Mini include Bolt?
No. The checked consumer US box lists the keyboard, charging cable and documentation; Bolt is not included. Check Business and bundle contents separately.
Does USB-C charging mean wired typing?
No such mode is documented in the checked connection specifications. Plan for Bluetooth or Bolt even while the charging cable is connected.
