M196 can suit someone who wants basic pointing without occupying a USB port. Check Bluetooth mouse support on the actual host first. A low-priced mouse is not a useful saving if your device cannot pair with it.
This guide covers the Logitech M196 Bluetooth Mouse. Official US product and getting-started pages were checked on October 5, 2026. We have not tested click noise, comfort, tracking, radio range or battery endurance. Purchase links may generate an affiliate commission for SEFP Journal without an additional charge to you.

Bluetooth on a device is only the first check
Logitech specifies Bluetooth-enabled computers or mobile devices that support external mice through the HID profile, and asks buyers to check with the device manufacturer. Verify that combination rather than treating every Bluetooth-equipped device as a supported host.
For a work computer, check whether pairing input devices is permitted. For a tablet, check how its OS handles a mouse and the tasks you intend to perform. We have not tested your device, every shortcut or every app’s pointer behavior. If Bluetooth is unavailable, choose a connection your host actually supports.
First pairing and connecting to another device
The official getting-started guide says to remove the battery pull-tab: the mouse turns on and is ready to pair. Connect through Bluetooth settings, or use Swift Pair on Windows.
For a new device, long-press the pairing button for three seconds until the LED blinks, then pair through the host. This is a documented pairing procedure; it does not establish saved three-device switching channels. If quick switching is your main need, verify that feature on the exact alternative you consider.
A single press of the bottom switch turns the mouse on or off. Follow the model-specific guide if setup fails, and confirm power and the intended host before changing unrelated software settings. We have not performed these steps on a physical M196.
Battery and range: plan around your own routine
Logitech lists a 12-month battery claim that varies with use, and a wireless range up to 10m that varies with environmental and computing conditions. Neither is our measured result. Keep a replacement AA available if an interruption would matter to your work.
For a desk with distance, obstructions or other wireless devices, evaluate the connection during an appropriate return period. Avoid buying it on the assumption that a maximum-range headline guarantees stable operation at every point in a room.
Who can keep the setup simple?
M196 can be enough if a compatible Bluetooth host, a compact ambidextrous shape and basic line-by-line scrolling match your routine. Try the shape where possible; the manufacturer’s shape description does not prove comfort for your hand.
Compare a different model if your purchase depends on silent clicks, additional controls or a specifically verified switching feature. Our M240 Silent vs Pebble Mouse 2 guide addresses another choice with different requirements. We do not label M196 silent without supporting evidence.

FAQ: Is 76g the weight without a battery?
The current official specification labels 76g as the weight with the battery. Use that configuration when comparing the mouse you will actually carry.
