TP-Link Archer TX20U vs TX20U Plus: Antenna Placement and Windows Checks

Choose between these adapters by where you can place them, not by assuming Plus means a faster speed class. Archer TX20U and TX20U Plus share the same listed AX1800 band rates. The Plus design adds adjustable external antennas and a supplied cable that lets you move the adapter away from the computer.

This guide uses current official UK specifications checked on October 5, 2026. Match the region and hardware version of your own purchase. We have not tested throughput, range, gaming latency or drivers on your PC. Purchase links may generate an affiliate commission for SEFP Journal without an additional charge to you.

When the Plus placement design can help

TX20U Plus has a desktop-oriented design with a one-metre cable and antennas that rotate/adjust through 180 degrees. It is worth comparing when the computer’s USB port leaves an adapter behind a case, close to obstacles or in a position you cannot adjust easily.

The cable gives you a placement option; it does not guarantee better coverage in every room. Before paying extra, identify an actual available spot within cable reach. If your direct USB position already works well, the larger external-antenna setup may add clutter without solving a problem.

Check Windows, USB and driver permissions first

Both UK product pages list Windows 10 and 11 and USB 3.0. Do not infer verified macOS or Linux support simply because the adapter plugs into USB. Check the exact regional download page and hardware version before ordering for an unlisted OS.

Use the official TX20U downloads or TX20U Plus downloads to match the version label on the device. On a managed PC, confirm permission to install the driver. A preloaded installer does not remove that requirement or prove every Windows build is trouble-free.

Check the host port and any adapter or hub in the path. Plan around a suitable USB 3.0 connection rather than using the wireless headline to assume an older port cannot become a bottleneck. We have not tested your cable, hub or computer.

Your router and internet plan still matter

TP-Link says Wi-Fi 6 features such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO also require support from the access point. Buying this client adapter does not upgrade an older router’s capabilities. Physical obstacles, interference, network traffic and the rest of the network can still limit results.

If your main problem is the router or the internet connection, replacing only the PC adapter may not address it. Check the current bottleneck first. Our Deco X20 vs X50 guide covers a separate mesh-router purchase decision.

Who can keep the package simple?

TX20U can be enough if its direct placement suits the desk and the supported driver/USB setup matches your computer. Its listed UK package contains the adapter and quick installation guide.

TX20U Plus can justify an extra cost when you need its confirmed placement cable and adjustable antenna design. Compare the complete regional package and actual price, rather than treating the suffix as a measured speed upgrade.

The official product pages provide regional purchase routes. Confirm hardware version, delivery, local warranty and return terms before using them. A reachable page does not guarantee stock, a fixed price gap or a particular performance improvement.

FAQ: Is Plus a different AX speed tier?

These UK specifications list the same 574Mbps 2.4GHz and 1201Mbps 5GHz rates. This comparison’s reason to consider Plus is its placement and antenna arrangement, not a higher listed speed class.
