Kobo Clara BW vs Colour: Which Screen Fits Your Reading?

Choose Kobo Clara BW for a compact black-and-white reading device; choose Clara Colour when seeing colour in your actual books matters. Both have a 6-inch screen and 16 GB of listed storage. Colour does not add a larger screen, stylus support or an audiobook advantage over BW.

Official Kobo product and support pages were checked on October 5, 2026. We have not tested contrast, colour appearance, page-turn speed or battery life. Screen, storage, light and water specifications come from the official Clara BW and Clara Colour pages. Some storage is used by software. Kobo’s model feature list confirms both support audiobooks and lists stylus-compatible devices separately.

Choose based on the books you actually read

BW is the direct choice for mainly text and monochrome material. If your reading rarely needs colour, name a useful colour task before paying a premium. Colour is worth considering for colour illustrations, diagrams or book covers that you want to see on this small device. That is a use-case recommendation, not a measured claim that one screen has better contrast or looks like a tablet.

Clara Colour’s listed 150 PPI applies to colour content; the same page lists 300 PPI for black-and-white content. Do not apply its black-and-white density to all coloured illustrations. Both remain 6-inch devices, so check a sample of a dense comic or fixed-layout document before assuming it will be comfortable at your preferred font or zoom setting.

The battery headlines use different brightness settings

Kobo lists up to 53 days for BW at 10% front-light brightness and up to 42 days for Colour at 30% brightness. Both estimates use 30 minutes of reading per day with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off. These are not matched-brightness tests, so subtracting the two numbers does not establish an 11-day advantage in your use. Longer sessions, lighting and wireless use change the practical result.

Colour is not a handwriting upgrade

Neither Clara model is listed as compatible with Kobo Stylus. Do not buy Clara Colour plus Stylus 2 expecting the handwritten notebook workflow of Kobo Libra Colour. A colour screen and a pen digitizer are different capabilities. If handwriting is essential, use the manufacturer’s feature list to choose an explicitly stylus-compatible model and budget for its separate accessories.

Audiobooks and accessory costs

Both support Kobo Audiobooks, so Colour is not required just to listen. Kobo’s audiobook instructions list both models and require paired Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Confirm the audiobook and service availability in your country before buying; the product pages qualify availability by region. Device purchase does not mean every book or subscription is included.

The official Clara Colour/BW SleepCover is an accessory for both models. Check the exact case name and local package rather than assuming a cover comes with every device offer. The advertised water rating also does not establish protection against every liquid, impact or charging condition; follow Kobo’s care guidance.

Before you buy

  • Check that your preferred books and services are available for Kobo in your country.
  • Decide whether colour matters in your actual reading, rather than only on the cover.
  • Try a sample for dense illustrated material on a 6-inch screen.
  • Budget for a suitable cover and Bluetooth audio accessory if you need them.
  • Use a stylus-compatible model if handwritten notes are essential.

Compare current regional prices and returns on the linked official product pages; we do not guarantee stock or a fixed price gap. For a broader tablet alternative, our Galaxy Tab A11+ vs Redmi Pad 2 guide covers a separate larger-screen, general-app decision. We do not treat a compact eReader as an equivalent video or app tablet.

FAQ

Does Clara Colour support Kobo Stylus 2?

No. Neither Clara Colour nor Clara BW is listed as Kobo Stylus compatible. Choose an explicitly compatible device for handwriting.

Do the battery numbers prove BW lasts 11 days longer?

No matched comparison is established. The 53-day and 42-day maxima use different front-light brightness settings, and your use may differ.

Do I need Colour for Kobo Audiobooks?

No. BW also supports them. Check country availability and pair a suitable Bluetooth headset or speaker.
