Tapo P110 vs P110M: Do You Need Matter for Energy Monitoring?

You do not need P110M simply to see a connected appliance’s energy use in the Tapo app: P110 already provides energy monitoring. Choose P110M when its Matter integration fits the smart-home platform you want to use. Check the controller and energy-display requirements separately before paying for an upgrade.

This guide compares the exact Tapo P110 and P110M, using UK product specifications and manufacturer support information checked on October 5, 2026. Regional plug types, hardware versions and pack sizes differ. We have not tested measurement accuracy, setup reliability or energy savings. P110 vs P110M: what the extra letter changes

The official UK P110 page lists energy monitoring, Tapo controls and Alexa/Google Assistant voice integration. The P110M page adds Matter certification and names Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings. These are two product models; do not treat ordinary P110 as a Matter-certified P110M.

Both can be considered for a Tapo-based setup. The P110 UK page advertises no separate hub for Tapo use and local Tapo control during an internet outage. Do not buy P110M solely on the assumption that ordinary P110 has no local control. Off-site control and a third-party platform’s automations have their own connectivity requirements.

Do you need a Matter controller?

TP-Link’s Matter setup guide recommends setting up through Tapo first for full device features, then adding the plug to the chosen Matter platform. Most third-party setups require a compatible controller, which may already be built into a speaker, display or other device you own. Check the exact model and current firmware before budgeting for another hub.

The same guide notes an Apple exception: with iOS 18 or later, a Matter device can be added directly to Apple Home without a hub, but remote access, shared control and automations are unavailable in that hub-free arrangement. Therefore, neither “a hub is always required” nor “an iPhone replaces every hub function” describes all setups.

P110M is a Wi-Fi product. Bluetooth is listed for onboarding, not as its everyday remote-control connection. Have a usable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and follow the platform’s onboarding instructions. Matter multi-admin can let a compatible device participate in several platforms, but it does not guarantee that every platform exposes identical features.

Matter energy monitoring depends on both sides

The UK P110M V1 firmware notes document an update adding Matter 1.3 real-time and historical energy reporting. They also warn that not every Matter app fully implements this support and identify SmartThings and Home Assistant as verified examples at that release. Check the support page for your own region and hardware version rather than installing a different variant’s firmware.

Tapo’s ecosystem feature matrix separates on/off control from energy monitoring and other functions, and warns that support evolves. A plug appearing in Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa does not by itself establish that its energy graphs are available there. We have not verified your particular app/controller combination. If third-party energy data is the reason to upgrade, confirm that exact combination first; otherwise use the documented Tapo energy view.

Choose the local socket and appliance rating first

The table uses UK page ratings. Do not apply a European 16A figure, US rating or different plug shape to a UK unit, or buy an overseas unit because a headline power number looks higher. Match the product label, region, hardware revision and appliance requirements. The P110 UK page explicitly excludes EV charging and warns against motors or compressors above 1/6 HP. A high wattage label alone does not establish suitability for every appliance.

Energy tracking helps you inspect usage; it is not a guaranteed saving or proof that the plug will repay its cost. Actual savings would require your tariff, a before-and-after comparison, changed appliance usage and the plug’s own consumption. No payback period or measured bill reduction is claimed here.

Who should buy each model?

  • P110 is enough: you want Tapo energy monitoring and switching, and do not need direct Matter integration into another ecosystem. Check the local complete price before adding accessories.
  • P110M makes sense: you want compatible Matter on/off control, multi-admin or Apple Home integration, and have confirmed the controller requirements. Its extra dependency is platform-specific feature support.
  • Verify before upgrading: your sole reason is third-party energy graphs, a particular automation or operation during an outage. Confirm the exact firmware, app and network conditions; certification alone does not answer all three.

FAQ and where to check the complete price

Can I turn a P110 into P110M later? The manufacturer identifies separate models. No P110-to-P110M conversion is established here. Buy the model that documents the integration you need.

Which purchase link should I use? The official UK store has model-specific P110 and P110M listings. Confirm pack quantity, per-plug cost, stock, delivery, returns and any controller cost. These UK links do not guarantee stock or suitability for other countries. For a different accessory decision, see our Anker 715 vs 735 shared-power guide.
