DJI Osmo Mobile 8 vs 7P: Should You Buy or Upgrade?

Choose DJI Osmo Mobile 8 for compatible iPhone DockKit tracking or unlimited pan rotation. Consider Osmo Mobile 7P if its local total price is lower and its existing tracking routes cover your filming. For a 7P owner, identify the missing feature before replacing the whole gimbal.

This buying guide compares the 8 with the 7P, not the lighter Osmo Mobile 7. It is based on manufacturer documentation checked on October 5, 2026, rather than a hands-on test. We have not measured tracking accuracy, stabilization quality or real-world battery life.

The numerical values above come from the Osmo Mobile 8 specifications and 7-series specifications. The weight comparison uses matching accessory conditions. The 7-series page also lists the non-P model, so check the model label when comparing a retailer’s specification.

Choose the tracking route before the gimbal

On the 8, DockKit requires iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later, excluding iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 16e. Use a DockKit-compatible app, close DJI Mimo and remove the Multifunctional Module. The 8’s module instead tracks people, cats and dogs in native or third-party apps on iPhone and Android. These conditions are documented in the Osmo Mobile 8 FAQ.

For the original 7P module, DJI documents people tracking outside Mimo. Mimo itself supports people, animals and objects; its module tracking and shooting functions are disabled inside Mimo. See the 7-series FAQ. App-based tracking and module-based tracking therefore should not be treated as the same feature.

Our buying recommendation is to start with the app you actually want to record in. If you need your phone’s native camera or a particular streaming app, check that route first. If you are comfortable recording in Mimo, judge its available camera modes on your exact phone rather than paying for a route you will rarely use. Android users should not buy the 8 expecting Apple DockKit.

When upgrading from 7P makes sense

DJI says the 8’s Multifunctional Module is compatible with 7P in its accessory FAQ. If external-app tracking is your issue, check that accessory’s regional listing, firmware requirements and intended feature support before buying another body. Compatibility alone does not establish that every newer feature works identically on the older setup.

Replacing the body is the relevant choice for the 8’s native DockKit and unlimited pan. Adding a module does not change the 7P’s motor rotation range. Our recommendation: keep a satisfactory 7P for ordinary filming; upgrade when a specific hardware limitation repeatedly interrupts your work. We do not claim an unmeasured improvement in footage quality.

Battery, portability and practical limits

Both specification pages list approximately 10 hours with the gimbal balanced, stationary and without additional accessories. Module tracking reduces the listed duration to approximately 5 hours with the light off, or 4 hours at maximum light brightness. Phone charging shortens runtime further. These are manufacturer conditions, not a promise for a moving shoot.

The matching folded size and extension length give little reason to change models solely for packing space or reach. Check your phone with its case and accessories fitted; a physical fit does not guarantee every Mimo recording mode. For a buyer, missing support for a required camera mode matters more than a small listed weight difference.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose 8: your compatible iPhone and chosen app can use DockKit, or unrestricted pan is a required hardware feature.
  • Consider 7P: its included module’s people tracking or Mimo covers your use, and the complete local package costs less.
  • Keep your 7P: it already handles your filming; investigate the compatible newer module before a body upgrade for an accessory-related gap.
  • Pause the purchase: your phone fit, app mode or exact accessory compatibility is still uncertain.

FAQ

Does 7P need a module for every kind of tracking? No. Mimo tracking and external-app module tracking are separate routes. Decide which app you need before evaluating accessories.

Does buying the 8 module turn 7P into an 8? No. DJI confirms module compatibility, but the body retains its own hardware limits. Verify your intended accessory features rather than assuming complete equivalence.

Is a newer body automatically the better value? Our view is no: value depends on the complete local price and the features you will use. This guide makes no measured performance ranking, discount forecast or stock guarantee.
