Logitech G305 vs G309: Bluetooth, AA Power and POWERPLAY Costs

Shortlist G305 for a straightforward receiver-based gaming setup; consider G309 if you specifically need Bluetooth or want to use POWERPLAY. Those extras are useful only when they solve your own connection or power problem.

This guide compares the original G305 LIGHTSPEED with standard G309, not the newer G305 X SUPERLIGHT or a special edition. Official US product and support pages were checked on October 5, 2026. We have not tested tracking, latency, switch feel, comfort or endurance. Purchase links may generate an affiliate commission for SEFP Journal without an additional charge to you.

Bluetooth is useful, but it is not three-device Easy-Switch

G309 can suit a compatible secondary device where you prefer not to plug in a receiver. However, Logitech’s host-pairing FAQ says only one Bluetooth host can be configured. A long press of the connectivity button starts a new pairing process.

Do not buy it expecting the saved three-Bluetooth-device channels found on some office mice. If that is your main need, our M650 vs M750 guide covers a different office-focused choice. Check the gaming and switching needs separately.

The 68g claim includes an accessory condition

G309 is listed at 86g with an AA battery, or 68g when used with POWERPLAY. Its standard box lists the mouse, LIGHTSPEED receiver, USB cable extender, grip stickers, AA battery and documentation. POWERPLAY is a separate purchase, so include its cost and desk space before choosing that route.

Removing the AA battery alone does not establish a working 68g standalone mouse. Follow the supported POWERPLAY setup. If you simply want replaceable-battery operation, decide whether its ordinary form fits your hand and your budget rather than comparing an accessory-dependent weight with your normal setup.

Software and host checks before buying

Use the current product compatibility panels to match your host and connection. G309’s US page lists USB-A receiver use for Windows 10 or later/macOS 11 or later, with Bluetooth requirements listed separately. Basic pointing support should not be treated as full configuration-app support.

The official G HUB page provides the configuration software and current downloads for Windows and macOS. Check its requirements for your computer, especially if an older product sheet mentions a much older OS. On a managed machine, confirm permission to install and configure the app before relying on customized controls.

Which extras are worth paying for?

G305 can be enough if one receiver-equipped computer is your normal setup and Bluetooth/POWERPLAY do not solve a problem. Compare the actual regional offer and fit before deciding. A higher maximum DPI is not a measured accuracy or gaming-result improvement.

G309 can justify a premium if Bluetooth matters or you already have a suitable POWERPLAY plan. Try the shape and controls where possible. We do not claim its hybrid switches guarantee a faster reaction, better aim or a preferred click feel for every user.

Purchase checklist

  • Match the complete model name; G305 X SUPERLIGHT is a different product.
  • Decide which host uses the receiver and whether Bluetooth is needed.
  • Budget for POWERPLAY separately if relying on that power/weight configuration.
  • Check exact local package, price, warranty and returns.
  • Verify current software compatibility rather than copying an old minimum OS line.

The linked official product pages provide current regional purchase options. A reachable listing does not guarantee stock, a fixed price gap or a particular seller’s battery bundle.

FAQ: Is G309 a 68g mouse without extra hardware?

Its 68g configuration depends on POWERPLAY. For ordinary AA-battery operation, use the listed 86g figure when planning your purchase.
